(1) (形声。从口，臭声。字本作“臭”，由“犬、自(鼻)”会意，狗的鼻子灵敏，善于闻嗅。本义：用鼻子辨别气味) 同本义 [smell scent；sniff]

食之则甘，嗅之则香。——《韩非子·外储说左下》

(2) 又如：嗅石(神兽名)；嗅闻(用鼻子辨别气味)
